Fetherston Mask Tutorial

Earlier this year, I posted about my love for Erin Fetherston's masks that were featured during her Fall 2009 runway show, and vowed to make them. Last night I finally did! Here my version P.S. I Made This style.

Here's what you need:

Paint on the glue in small sections, then pour glitter on the wet glue.

Repeat!

Before you know it, you'll have a glittered mask!

A tip: Lighter glitter will show the pattern underneath like the pink I used for the tiger mask, but I think it looks cool!

No remorse

Shopping is a weakness. I've made many an impulse buy (I'm talking to you ivory boots) which was followed by a deep sense of regret.

I've also made some fantastic purchases which continue to please with every use. The above are a recent acquisition and with each passing day I think they are better and better. I am in deep like with them. Pretty sure we're getting serious.

Durable oiled leather, crazy comfortable wooden heel, amazing with both pants and skirts.

I done good.

Drastic Cherries

Apparently the new band craze is playing under the anagram of your band's name.

Naturally, I had to figure out my anagram. There were a ton of options, but I chose Drastic Cherries because it was the coolest.

My favorite Cherry? Cherry from The Outsiders. How pretty is Diane Lane?? That kind of pretty isn't normal. My second favorite cherries are maraschino. They're terrible for you and so sweet it makes my teeth hurt, but I like them anyway.

Gone to the birds

Ever since I volunteered in the bird nursery at a wildlife center, I see all kinds of bird personalities shining through as I look around at the Crows and Robins and other little avian creatures. That's one reason why I love these bird houses. The other reason is this video I saw on Cute Overload (naturally).

I simply cannot get enough. To me, it is so cute, and a magical little bird world I wish was real.

My favorite parts are:

1) When he whistles as he hops to the fridge. I have that tune stuck in my head.

2) At the end when the slogan is tweeted instead of said.

I hope you like it! It makes me happy.

The heart of this blog is sugar and every sweet thing that inspires me. Sugar cane is the mother of all sugar, so I felt it deserved a little visual spotlight. My mother is from Honduras, and I have fond memories of gnawing on raw sugar cane sticks when visiting my family in Central America.

I was craving funnel cakes, started looking them up, and a post was born. Carnivals are not really in season right now but funnel cakes are fun to imagine enjoying at all times of the year.

If you're feeling bold, you can make them yourself. Here's a recipe that promises it's up to caliber of your local county fair.

Mine was scraping off the seams of little ceramic figurines before they were fired in a kiln.

Disclaimer: I know this collection debuted a year ago, but I didn't have my blog then, so....

Masks from Erin Fetherston's Fall 2009 collection.

I absolutely, positively adore these masks. They are whimsical, magical, sugary, impractical and probably to some a little bit frightening. I love them and the fact that they exist.

I have a lofty goal of making one for Halloween, and then wearing it every Halloween after. A little internet research has ensued, but I'm not quite satisfied with the results. I think once you find the right mask base, it would be a cinch to glitter up. A how-to post will definitely be on the horizon once I get the right pieces.

For now, I will relish in the idea that I can one day have one of these.

Seven things

I've been tagged by Micaela of Dolce Vita to share seven deliciously random things about me.

1) I have an army. They are an army of specially trained forces that fight off the evil powers that is known as neighbor noise.

Today I salute these little foam earplugs in honor of the sanity they bring to my life.

2) Once upon a time, in a land not too far away, I was a designer at Nordstrom. My specialty was sweaters and knits. I'm on to bigger and brighter things, but the discount sure did come in handy!

3) I collect Frankoma pottery and have a pretty nice collection if I do say so myself. I first learned about Frankoma in Martha Stewart about 10 years ago. What drew me to it is the color palette and the way the glaze breaks creating a two tone effect. Shown here is just the tip of the iceberg, in my favorite glaze color Prairie Green. Isn't the little squirrel cute? He's one of my faves.

4) This book, which was part of my 8th grade reading curriculum, was the catalyst for me to stop eating meat. I'm a very sensitive girl and I couldn't get the literary images out of my head.

5) Last summer I volunteered as a bird rehabber at PAWS, taking care of orphaned and injured birds. I plan to do it again this summer, it was very fulfilling for me. Birds are very demanding in the cutest way possible. I had a soft spot for Barn Swallows, though it's tough to pick, I liked them all. The Barn Swallows are so grumpy looking and their flight pattern is so elegant.

6) I seem to have a thing for hummingbirds. My wonderful boyfriend purchased this print for me from Sam of Matou En Peluche, and I love it. It's titled The Patron Saint of Hummingbirds. I'm working on getting it displayed properly. I found the most unique Victorian mat, with even more birds on it, and now just need a frame.

7) I flew down to L.A. and back to Seattle in a day, to film an episode of Tori and Dean Inn Love.
Long story, it was all coordinated by the machine that is PR, but it was never aired. Cutting room floor for me! Probably for the best, I had a pixie haircut and not sure I ever wanted to see that on camera.
Tidbit: I shook hands with Tori when we met, and she has the softest hands I've ever felt.
Perhaps because she's never worked a day in her life with them. Catty!

When I met her she looked exactly like this, which is why I selected this photo. I don't have any tangible evidence that this happened unfortunately. I didn't take pics back then!

Did you know there is a delicious perfume that smells just like cotton candy? I have been wearing Aquolina's Pink Sugar scent for two years. As I spritzed it on, it dawned on me that I need to share this information!

Since I'm on the subject of fragrance, I alternate between Pink Sugar and Tuberose Gardenia by Estee Lauder Private Collection. Just glorious.

Pssst! I have the sensible bottle because I am a sensible girl. I wouldn't mind the pretty bottle someday though, when I'm not so sensible.

The diary

The Simple Diary is on my "to buy" list this week. I enjoyed reading about other bloggers favorite moments of 2009, and this diary will help me for two reasons:

1) It will help me recall all the sweet little moments, without having to try hard to catalog them in my head.

2) I am not much of a writer, so this keeps it short and sweet with fun multiple choice options and clever fill in the blanks.

The dream

Apparently I dream in cotton candy. Last night I had a dream I was in an 80's movie and a gang of little kids came into our local hang out with nerf like guns, strangely similar to the above picture. They were threatening to shoot us with cotton candy puffs. I was a little scared...what a waste of cotton candy.

Before the dream, in real life, I saw Fantastic Mr. Fox. I really enjoyed it and it felt very much like a Wes Anderson movie, and that makes me happy. The theater we went to had a special room I imagine is meant to bring noisy kids into so they don't disrupt the other viewers. To me, it was like heaven -- my own private screening room where the other viewers don't disrupt me!

The jacket

I've owned this vintage little jacket for several years now and I have not worn it once. Travesty. I can't seem to figure out what to wear with it. I know it will look great with a dress, but I want to dress it down a little. The two issues I have with the jacket are:

1) It has short sleeves

2) It is cropped

These little tanks from J.Crew caught my eye. At $49 they are affordable.

I've been eyeing this Kain label tee for awhile. Because it's one size, it has a slouchy fit. I know I would get tons of wear out of it with or without the jacket.

I like the idea of mixing the sparkles with The Who. The sleeves might get in the way though...

A little part of me wants to get something with long sleeves to wear it in the colder weather. I feel like stripes are always a winner, but I could be wrong on this one.

What are your thoughts? Which top do you think would be best, OR if you have a suggestion, I am open to them! Please!
